Temple Terrace Smoking Ban Lifted The city council voted Tuesday night to rescind its policy banning the hiring of people who smoke.
The policy, enacted in June, drew national attention to this suburban community of 21,000. Although some applauded the measure, many criticized it as discriminatory.
The policy was drafted by city administrators, without council input, in an effort to curb rising health insurance costs.
But after a whirlwind of publicity, the council took up the subject at its July 17 meeting. After a lengthy debate, the council voted 3-2 to retain the policy.
However, Councilman Frank Chillura - who had voted to retain it - said Tuesday night he has been haunted by second thoughts.
``I'm not wishy-washy,'' he said. ``But this really bothered me. I just feel like it's a step too far. It's a violation of one's rights. I have no problem with the city saying no smoking at work. But with smoking being legal, I don't think it's right to say you can't work for Temple Terrace.''
Chillura made a motion Tuesday night to overturn the policy. That drew criticism from council members Joe Affronti and Jo Jeter.
``I'm very disappointed in this,'' Affronti said. ``I thought it was an issue that was behind us.''
Jeter agreed, saying the council was setting a new record for changing its mind.
``Why do we keep doing things if they're just going to be undone?'' she asked.
But Chillura said he felt morally compelled to revisit the issue.
``I was real uneasy with my [previous] decision,'' he said. ``I don't want to micromanage the staff. But it's a free country, and if people want to smoke, that's up to them.''

Would you believe that we might have made a difference here?

Hey folks, we might have made a difference here.
If we can get just one person to rethink their decisions we might make a difference.

My letter to Michael Dunn:
Dear Michael Dunn,
Temple Terrace Smoking Ban Lifted
What a wonderful article. Thank you for taking time to write this. It gives great hope to American adults who choose to smoke a legal commodity!
There is no room in our lives now for single-issue activists who only seek to control a group of people who have a lifestyle they do not like.
The single-issue activists are nothing more then domestic terrorist, who are still conducting a Jihad on the adult smoker.
Thank you!!

Nice letter SheLion. I searched to see if this had been posted before but didn't see it anywhere.
It may have been posted already back in August or September and I just couldn't find it.

Boy!, we're not getting much interest in this.
I wonder if I should hit the bump list with a victory?

"I thought it was an issue that was behind us."
Typical 'one-way' socialist shyster; all 'progress' is irreversible....B*stards!

To celebrate, I'm going outside to have a tasty after-lunch cigarette. Too bad it's windy and freezing outside and they won't let us near the building! But hey, at least I'm allowed to work here, right? ;)

Former smoker here, but nonetheless, I am incensed by fanatics who bolster their shallow egos by treating smokers like lepers. Score one for the masses.

What! A politician that thinks that Americans have free-will, and are not mind-numbed robots?
Oh, the humanity .................. </ sarcasm >

Where is this, Floriduuuuuh? If for
nothing else (let alone anti-discrimination precedents), what about the disabilities acts, if employers are so panty-wadded about hiring smokers for health risks? Now
my tighty whities are in a wad.

``I'm very disappointed in this,'' Affronti said. ``I thought it was an issue that was behind us.''
These guys must have been part of the "count every vote" movement last year about this same time???? And so they did keep on "countin' and countin' and countin' and countin'. . .Every time Dubya was the winner, so they kept wantin' to keep countin' and countin' and countin' and countin'. . . ;-)
